CLEVELAND - We all know that negative thoughts aren’t good for our psyche, but can negative thinking actually be harmful to our physical health?
Scott Bea, PsyD, of Cleveland Clinic, said for years doctors have had notions that attitudes and thoughts may predispose us to early aging, but more and more these notions are turning into scientific research.
He said there are different types of negative thinking and each can be impactful.
“One is just cynical hostility, where you know, we stew a lot,” said Dr. Bea. “We’re kind of suspicious, we’re pretty certain the world or folks are against us and it stays with us; it keeps some of the stress chemicals like cortisol circulating in our system too long.”
Dr. Bea said some studies have looked at how certain types of behavior and thought patterns can impact our aging and DNA.
He said we tend to lump all negative thinking into one place, but there are actually many little ways that we can think that can actually harm us and that might be influencing our telomeres – the tips at the end of our DNA that affect the aging process.
Thoughts like pessimism – always predicting doom and gloom, as well as ruminating – where we’re dredging up past events and mulling them over again – can keep stress chemicals active and alive.
Dr. Bea also said thought suppression – where we actively try to avoid thoughts - takes a lot of activity and tension and tends to overload our brains.
When we’re engaged in the outside world, and not in our own heads, Dr. Bea said we can better handle these negative thought patterns.
The key is to be able to recognize that thoughts are just thoughts.
“Often we’re fighting, we’re trying to suppress the thought, but you could say, ‘I’m allowed to think, I’m just allowed to have thoughts’,” said Dr. Bea. “Maybe notice thoughts without trying to fix them or trying to solve a problem, but just noticing it’s a thought.”
Dr. Bea said getting ‘out of’ our own head is a process that takes practice and if done right, can be used throughout life.
He recommends a simple mindfulness exercise that can be done even in five second bursts at various times throughout the day. Try to focus on the sensation of your breath and simply notice what distracts you from the breath. It might be a sound, sensation, or just a thought. When you recognize that you have become distracted, try to ease your attention back to your breath since this is what is really going on right now.
