CLEVELAND - For years, experts have advised against television viewing for babies and very young toddlers.

But with the increased prevalence of hand held electronic devices, parents have more screens to manage than ever before.

Kimberly Giuliano, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic Children’s said keeping our youngest children away from all electronics is best for those crucial months when their speech is still developing.

“Children learn speech by experiencing it and having that communication and interaction with a human being,” said Dr. Giuliano. “While a device may be exposing them to words, there’s not that back and forth reciprocal interaction that teaches them the social piece behind it all, and that’s where children really learn and solidify their language skills.”

Dr. Giuliano said there is one exception to the ‘screen time’ rule. She said having a face-to-face video chat with a grandparent or relative is fine for children of all ages, because it allows for real social interaction.

Recent research looked at 1,077 children between the ages of six months and two years over a four year period.

They found that for every 30 minutes of hand-held screen time per day, children were more likely to have a delay in their ability to use sounds and words.

Dr. Giuliano said once a child is 18 months old, it’s okay to expose them to educational programming, but they shouldn’t be watching it alone. She recommends having them watch with a caregiver so that they can talk about it, interact and provide them with reinforcement to be able to actually learn from the programming.

Regardless of the age of the child, Dr. Giuliano said it’s important to set limits on the total amount of time spent using devices and watching television.

“We still should be somewhat mindful of the time and spending hours and hours on end doing any activity over and over again is not good for a developing brain,” said Dr. Giuliano. “So doing these for very short periods of time and trying to limit it to less than 30 minutes a day is probably very appropriate for young toddlers.”
