CLEVELAND - August is National Immunization Awareness Month.
Experts say that August is the perfect time to make sure children are up-to-date on vaccines before heading back to school, as well as prepare everyone for flu season.
Richard So, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic Children’s said protecting children with vaccines should be as automatic as buckling their safety belt.
“You put your kid in a car seat every single day; you buckle that seat belt every time you get in the car,” said Dr. So. “I think vaccines are just as important as putting on your seat belt.”
Dr. So said children should be vaccinated according to the schedule that is set forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC).
He said some parents might not think that it’s important to vaccinate against diseases that aren’t wide spread anymore, but warned the effectiveness of the vaccines are the reason that we don’t typically see devastating diseases such as polio, mumps or measles anymore.
Dr. So said it’s also not wise to delay vaccines just because a child is fearful of needles and that doing so puts children at risk for harmful diseases. Sticking to the schedule eliminates this risk as well as the possibility for confusion at future appointments about which vaccines were given and when.
It’s important for healthy children to get their flu vaccines because not only do they help protect the child who gets the vaccine, but they help protect children with congenital heart disease, immune problems or chronic disease from getting the flu, according to Dr. So. Children with these conditions cannot get the flu vaccine and could become dangerously ill if infected.
“It’s a community decision – keeping everybody safe,” said Dr. So. “There are certain children that cannot get the vaccines, whether they have immune problems, or their bodies cannot respond to the vaccines. I think it’s our job as a community to help protect those people and keep our herd immunity.”
Dr. So reminds parents that vaccines aren’t just for younger children. Adolescents needs tetanus boosters and meningitis vaccines, as well as the HPV vaccine. He said when the vaccine schedules are started when recommended, they are typically more effective.
